Kenya, November 06, 2026 - The State Department for Irrigation has started feasibility studies, surveys and detailed designs for 14 water, irrigation and livestock projects across seven wards in Turkana County under the Drought Resilience Programme in Northern Kenya.
The package, part of the programme’s third Annual Implementation Plan, includes 11 boreholes, one water pan, one irrigation scheme and one livestock market. Technical teams led by Eng. Evance Lusi have begun physical site visits to confirm locations and check suitability after a planning and kick-off meeting.
Named sites include the Kaemase Irrigation Scheme in Lobei/Kotaruk Ward, the Nalet Water Pan in Songot Ward and the Nakoret Livestock Market in Kerio Delta Ward. The remaining boreholes are distributed across the seven wards.
The exercise is supported by the German government through KfW. It will cover feasibility studies, Environmental and Social Impact Assessments, community consultations, socio-economic surveys, hydrogeological and hydrological studies, topographical surveys and preliminary engineering calculations.

Teams will prepare ESIA reports and seek National Environment Management Authority licences. Once those are secured, the process moves to detailed engineering designs, technical specifications and tender documents needed for construction.
Officials say the studies will establish the technical, environmental and social requirements of each project before any building begins. The 14 interventions aim to improve access to reliable water, expand irrigation and strengthen livestock-related livelihoods for communities that face repeated drought.
The work forms part of a wider Drought Resilience Programme in Northern Kenya that has already delivered completed projects in earlier phases and continues to prioritise water security and climate adaptation in Turkana.
