Kenya, November 06, 2026 - The Court of Appeal has opened in Meru, bringing appellate services closer to residents of Meru, Tharaka Nithi, Isiolo, Marsabit and Embu who previously had to travel to Nyeri or Nairobi.
The move cuts the time and cost burden that advocates and litigants faced for years. Joel Mutuma, chairperson of the Law Society of Kenya Mount Kenya Branch, described it as a game changer.
“The opening of Court of Appeal in Meru is a game changer because all of us as advocates, we had to take long distances all the way to Nyeri to go to the Court of Appeal and we are happy that the wheels of justice will move faster,” Mutuma said. He added that the Presiding Judge is pushing the court hard and that advocates are ready to work.
Hon Atiang Mitullah, Head of Station at Meru Law Courts, said the opening goes beyond a new court building. “Today it is not just an opening of a Court. It is the opening of a door of justice closer to the citizens of Kenya and in particular the people of Meru, Tharaka Nithi, Isiolo, Marsabit and Embu who would travel to Nyeri or Nairobi to access the CoA. This was a burden in terms of time and costs which burden has now been lifted.”

Mitullah linked the development to Article 48 of the Constitution, which guarantees access to justice for all. He assured the Court of Appeal of full support and cooperation from Meru Law Courts.
Hon Robert Oada, Head of Station at Nkubu Law Courts, said the establishment of the court represents a significant step towards decentralising judicial services and reducing the geographical and financial burden of accessing justice. He pledged that staff would uphold professionalism, integrity, accountability and service excellence.
The new Court of Appeal station is expected to ease pressure on distant appellate courts and speed up the handling of cases from the wider Mount Kenya and northern region.
