MOGADISHU, 5 November 2026 – The opposition Somali Salvation Forum on Thursday expressed support for a statement circulated on the Supreme Court's social media platforms challenging amendments to the country's 2012 Provisional Constitution.
Members of the forum told the media in Mogadishu they welcomed the position outlined in the statement, which maintains that the government's term of office is four years and argues that federal institutions have exceeded their constitutional mandate. The statement also called for consensus-based elections within 90 days.
Former President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, former Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire and opposition lawmaker Abdirahman Abdishakur Warsame spoke on behalf of the forum. They said the court's position could help the country navigate its current political crisis.
Khaire raised concerns about the security of the judges who issued the decision, alleging security forces had been deployed against them and court personnel had been subjected to violence.

"Security forces assaulted the guards of Baashe and court staff, and now the five judges who issued the decision they believe could save the country are being sought," Khaire said.
The forum's support came a day after President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud removed Supreme Court Chief Justice Baashe Yusuf Ahmed from office and appointed lawyer Ibrahim Idle Suleiman as his replacement.
The developments come amid growing political tensions over constitutional amendments, the duration of government mandates and the future of Somalia's electoral process.
