MOGADISHU, 6 October 2026 Somalia's Academy of Sciences, Culture, Arts and Literature has called for a review of the law governing the arts, saying it needs to reflect current challenges facing the arts and literature sectors.
Academy Chairman Osman Yusuf Osman said the law could be resubmitted for discussion by the Council of Ministers and the Federal Parliament before going through the legislative approval process.
He made the remarks at a symposium held in Mogadishu on Monday to discuss the circumstances surrounding Somali arts and literature, attended by poets, academics and members of the academy.
Renewing the law was important to address challenges affecting artists and the arts sector, while also raising concerns over creative rights and claims of ownership of older Somali songs, he said.
