Somalia, June 1, 2026 - The United States has called on Somali political stakeholders to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could fuel violence or instability, as political tensions continue to mount in Mogadishu.
In a statement posted by the U.S. Embassy in Mogadishu on Monday, Washington urged all parties to pursue dialogue and cooperation in support of peace and stability across Somalia.
“The United States urges all stakeholders to exercise restraint and avoid actions that fuel violence or instability,” the embassy said.
“We encourage all parties to commit to dialogue and cooperation in support of peace and stability across Somalia,” it added.
The statement comes amid escalating political tensions between Somalia’s Federal Government and opposition leaders in Mogadishu, who have called for a public demonstration on June 4.

The U.S. appeal follows similar messages from international partners who have urged Somali leaders to resume political dialogue and reach consensus on key electoral and governance issues, while cautioning against steps that could further heighten tensions.
In a statement issued earlier today, representatives of the international community said:
“We call on all sides to resume dialogue as soon as possible, and to swiftly reach consensus on an election roadmap in the interest of the Somali people. We stand ready to support Somali-led talks if requested. We urge leaders to prioritize the national interest and refrain from actions that could escalate tensions.”
The statement was signed by the European Union, the United Nations, and a group of Western diplomatic missions in Somalia, including the United Kingdom, Italy, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Ireland, Austria, Belgium, Poland, Spain and Finland.
