UK, August 30, 2026 - Manchester United face Ipswich Town at Old Trafford on Sunday knowing that anything less than victory will increase the pressure around Michael Carrick's side after a disastrous opening weekend.
United began their Premier League campaign with a 2-0 defeat away to newly promoted Hull City, despite dominating possession and registering 21 shots. The failure to turn that control into goals was a major concern, particularly for a team that finished third last season and is expected to compete near the top of the table.
The fixture gives United an immediate opportunity to respond. However, Ipswich will arrive at Old Trafford with confidence after beginning their return to the Premier League with a 2-1 victory over Sunderland, secured by Jack Clarke's 90th-minute winner. Gary O'Neil's team have also won their opening two competitive matches, having beaten Leicester City in the Carabao Cup.
Carrick has rejected suggestions that his players lacked effort or leadership against Hull, arguing that the defeat was influenced by tactical mistakes, particularly from set pieces. Nevertheless, the manager needs a significantly sharper performance against Ipswich.
There is some positive news in midfield, with Carlos Baleba arriving from Brighton in a £60 million deal. However, the Cameroon international will not make his debut after suffering an ankle injury that is expected to keep him out for around three weeks.

United will therefore continue to rely heavily on Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford and their attacking options to unlock an Ipswich defence that will likely look to frustrate the hosts and exploit spaces on the counter.

Yet history will mean little if United repeat the mistakes made against Hull.
