Somalia, 7 June 2026 – Two candidates vying for the presidency of Somalia’s Southwest State have called for a transparent, fair, and independent electoral process ahead of the vote scheduled for June 10.
Shariif Hassan Sheikh Aadan and Abdiasiis Mohamed Sheekh Osman Jawaari, in a joint statement on Sunday, expressed concerns about potential irregularities in the election process. They urged the Federal Government, civil society organizations, traditional elders, Somali observers, and the international community to closely monitor the proceedings.
The candidates warned against attempts to undermine voters’ freedom by introducing opaque systems they described as coercive or overly controlled, which could compromise both the independence of the parliamentarians and public confidence in the election results.
They also called for the resignation of House Speaker Aadan Mohamed Nuur Madoobe, who is running for president, to ensure neutrality during the election.

The Southwest State presidential election is scheduled for June 10, with the newly elected leader to be chosen by the members of the State’s House of Representatives.
