MOGADISHU, September 6, 2026 - Somalia’s National Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has requested Parliament to review some provisions of the National Electoral Law, saying it has faced technical challenges in implementing parts of the legislation.
The Chairman of the National Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, Abdikarim Ahmed Hassan, accompanied by Deputy Chairman Sadaq Abshir Garaad, commission members and the Secretary-General, held a meeting on Saturday with Speaker of the House of the People Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur Jama and members of the House Committee on Internal Affairs.
During the meeting, the commission briefed Parliament on its activities since its establishment, including the Banadir local council elections, the combined elections held in South West State and the Galmudug elections, which were later annulled by the Supreme Court.
The commission also presented technical challenges that emerged during the implementation of some provisions of the National Electoral Law and submitted recommendations for possible amendments to address those issues.

The Supreme Court of Somalia previously annulled the results of the Galmudug combined elections and ordered the electoral commission to conduct fresh elections in the state as soon as possible.
For his part, Speaker Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur Jama encouraged the commission to continue organizing direct elections based on the one-person, one-vote system, saying Parliament supports the implementation of direct electoral processes in the country.
The Speaker also urged the commission to ensure that elections are managed through an inclusive, free and transparent process aligned with the Constitution and national electoral laws.
