Somalia, July 27 2026 – Somalia and Türkiye are moving toward implementing a bilateral fisheries agreement after a Turkish delegation visited Mogadishu Port to assess facilities and discuss preparations for planned operations, a port official said on Sunday.
The delegation was led by Turgay Türkyılmaz, director general at Türkiye's Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, and included representatives of Turkish fisheries companies, Mogadishu Port Deputy Manager Ali Haji Mohamed said.
Ali said the delegation inspected the port's infrastructure and held technical discussions on logistical arrangements needed to support fishing vessels, seafood handling, processing and exports under the agreement.
"We expect the work to begin soon," Ali said, adding that the port was ready to provide logistical support for the planned fisheries operations.

The visit comes days after Somalia and Türkiye launched joint technical committees to oversee implementation of the fisheries agreement signed by the two governments. According to Ali, the committees will coordinate technical cooperation, investment and operational planning as the partnership moves into its implementation phase.
The fisheries agreement is part of broader cooperation between Somalia and Türkiye under a framework signed in March 2024. In the fisheries sector, the partnership aims to strengthen fish production, processing and exports through investment, technology transfer and capacity building.
Somalia is seeking to develop its fisheries industry as a key pillar of its blue economy, with officials viewing the partnership as a means to attract investment, create jobs and better utilize the country's extensive marine resources.
