Kenya, 25 October 2026 – Wiper Patriotic Front party leader Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka on Sunday urged a section of opposition leaders to relax as he plans to meet former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who leads the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP).
Kalonzo, who served as Vice President before the 2010 Constitution was promulgated, said Wiper leaders had been keen from the onset to reject Gachagua’s impeachment, which was orchestrated by Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse of Maendeleo Chap Chap (MCCP).
He said he is Gachagua’s most reliable friend as they push to outshine President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.
The Wiper leader’s remarks followed claims by DCP Deputy Party Leader and Kakamega gubernatorial aspirant Cleophas Malala that, as Kalonzo plans to visit Gachagua, the two are poised to discuss how Kalonzo should shelve his ambitions and let Linda Mwananchi Movement presidential aspirant Edwin Sifuna become the opposition’s flag bearer in the 2027 General Election.
Kalonzo said he would speak with all leaders eyeing the presidency within the opposition fold to convince them that he is the most qualified and most capable of defeating Dr Ruto.
He said that when Gachagua was impeached, many thought he had been sent into political oblivion, but he has come out much stronger than they thought.
“We visit each other. I went to Wamunyoro when many said that Gachagua would not leave his village home in Nyeri and afterwards, he also visited me in Tseikuru, Kitui County. Obviously there are people sent to try to separate us,” Kalonzo said.
He was speaking during the 40th Anniversary Memorial and Thanksgiving Service of Mzee Ephantus Muchiri at Ithare-Ini in Kirinyaga County.
Kalonzo urged all opposition leaders to remain united and gang up against President Ruto of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

“We are only left with 10 months or less than 290 days before the next General Election,” Kalonzo said.
He said his former boss, the late President Mwai Kibaki, allowed democracy and political pluralism to flourish. Kalonzo urged President Ruto to respect the rights of youths and other Kenyans to hold peaceful protests.
“Even in France we saw students holding protests over a number of issues and French President Emmanuel Macron had to respect their picketing rights,” he said.
Kalonzo also said the Maina Kiai case in court had made it very clear that the final tally is determined by the number of votes cast, valid and counted at each polling station. He condemned an attempt by MPs to remove the mandatory requirement for live transmission of election results.
“You cannot mess around with the results of a polling station,” Kalonzo said.
Kalonzo claimed the current administration has failed and that there is no difference between police and goons.
"I have been sent by God to make Ruto a one-term President," he said.
