MOGADISHU, 25 October 2026 Humanitarian aid to Somalia has fallen by 70% over the past two years and could stop entirely, according to Mahmoud Moallim Abdulle, commissioner of the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA).
Moallim made the remarks on Sunday at a meeting in Mogadishu bringing together government officials and community representatives to discuss cooperation in responding to El Niño risks.
“Humanitarian aid has declined by 70% over the past two years, and there are fears it could stop entirely,” he said.
The commissioner said the decline in external support highlighted the need for the Somali government and public to strengthen self-reliance and contribute jointly to relief efforts.Organised by SoDMA and running on 25–26 October, the meeting brings together members of the diaspora, religious leaders, businesspeople and representatives of humanitarian organisations.
Discussions focus on strengthening community solidarity, coordinating relief efforts and improving systems to prevent and respond to El Niño-related risks.
Moallim said the two-day meeting would provide an opportunity to discuss how the government and different sections of society could work together on these priorities.
