Somalia, 28 December 2025 The Federal Government of Somalia plans to sanction several senior public officials accused of direct involvement in the controversial recognition of Somaliland by Israel.
This unprecedented move reflects Somalia’s deep discontent with actions that undermine its sovereignty.
Officials Targeted
Sources say one of those targeted for sanctions is an Ambassador serving in one of the powerful Asian countries. The envoy has already, sources said, has already been summoned for questioning. The Somali diplomat is alleged to have played a role in facilitating the recognition of Somaliland’s independence by Israel. Sources added that the government has signaled that the Ambassador’s actions may lead to a recall.
In addition to the Ambassador, a senator from the Upper House of Parliament has declared his intention to resign, reportedly in response to allegations linking him to the recognition issue. The decision follows intense scrutiny from opposition leaders and public outcry over the government’s handling of the matter.
A third individual, a former minister who once in the foreign affairs docket, is also facing accusations of involvement. Evidence reportedly points to his participation in discussions surrounding the recognition, adding to the growing tensions between the Somali government and those suspected of supporting foreign recognition of Somaliland.

Government’s Response
The Somali government has strongly denounced Israel’s recognition of Somaliland, labeling it a violation of international law and a threat to regional stability. President Hassan Sheikh's administration has expressed its commitment to taking “all necessary legal steps” to safeguard the unity and territorial integrity of Somalia.
The sanctions are seen as a direct response to what the government describes as “a serious breach of trust” by officials who reportedly acted against national interests. The Federal Government aims to ensure that such actions do not go unpunished and to send a clear message to anyone attempting to undermine Somalia’s sovereignty.
Political Fallout
While the government’s decision to sanction those allegedly involved in the recognition has been welcomed by many in the public, questions remain about the broader political implications. Opposition leaders have called for transparency in the investigation, urging the government to provide clear evidence of wrongdoing before any official action is taken. Some have warned that the sanctions may escalate tensions within Somalia’s political landscape.
Somalia’s relations with Israel and other international actors remain a key issue as the situation unfolds, with many observers keenly watching how the Somali government will navigate this diplomatic crisis.
