Somalia, 25 April 2026 — Somalia moved to identify citizens dead off Algeria’s coast, after images showed suspected Somali migrants.
Government officials said images of up to 17 bodies, believed to be Somali nationals, were presented in Mogadishu on Saturday night to help families identify missing relatives.
The victims, reportedly aged between 18 and 30, are believed to have been traveling on a migrant boat that capsized along Algeria’s coastline. The bodies include both men and women.

Somalia’s Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) has urged families with missing relatives who may have attempted such journeys to contact the emergency hotline 440 or visit the agency’s offices to assist in the identification process.
The incident comes amid growing concerns over irregular migration, as increasing numbers of Somali youth attempt dangerous routes to Europe in search of better opportunities.
