May 31 , 2026 - President William Ruto on Sunday commissioned several development projects in parts of Wajir County ahead of the 62nd Madaraka Day celebrations scheduled for Monday.
The President arrived in Habaswein town to commission a mini-grid power project and last-mile electricity connectivity programme in Wajir South Constituency.
He also inspected the ongoing construction of roads in Habaswein before addressing a large crowd alongside several leaders, including Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale.
Addressing residents, Ruto promised to open up the Northeastern region after years of marginalisation by successive governments, saying his administration is committed to ensuring equitable development across the country.
“For the first time in Kenya’s history, tomorrow we are celebrating Madaraka Day in Wajir. For the first time, there will be no politics of discrimination in any part of Kenya,” he said.
The President announced that the Modogashe–Habaswein–Samatar road project will commence soon, with consultants expected on the ground by June.
“Many times, people from this region would say they are coming to Kenya when visiting Nairobi because of the lack of development and road networks. I want to say that under my administration, that will be a thing of the past,” he added.

The Head of State said Northeastern Kenya has also lagged behind in electricity connectivity, noting that he had commissioned a KSh680 million mini-grid and last-mile connectivity project in Habaswein.
“In our programme to expand electricity access, Northern Kenya has one of the lowest connectivity rates. That is why I have directed the Ministry of Energy to undertake affirmative action measures to accelerate connectivity in the region,” he said.
Ruto added that the government plans to establish additional mini-grids across Wajir County to improve access to electricity in remote areas.
He also said the government has equipped hospitals in Wajir and other parts of the region to improve healthcare services and urged residents to register with the Social Health Authority (SHA).
The President further announced an affirmative action programme to recruit an additional 100 teachers for every constituency in Northeastern Kenya to address staffing gaps caused by insecurity-related transfers.
“Youths from this region will be teaching learners in Northern Kenya. We are ready to hire you so that children in Northern Kenya can access education like children in every other part of the country,” he said.
