August 29, 2026 - Community elders in Lafey Sub-County have strongly condemned an early morning shooting incident in Damasa, calling on the government and security agencies to urgently investigate the attack and bring those responsible to justice.
The incident reportedly occurred at around 4:00 a.m. during the Fajr prayer (Morning Prayer) when armed assailants opened fire near a local mosque in Damasa killing a local imam before fleeing the area.
The attack has raised concern among residents, with local leaders warning that such incidents could undermine peace and security in the area if not addressed promptly.
Speaking of the incident, Abdullahi Gesey, an elder from Lafey, condemned the attack and urged security agencies to conduct a comprehensive investigation.
“We strongly condemn this incident. It is deeply concerning that such an attack could happen during the early morning hours when people are going to the mosque for prayers. The authorities must investigate thoroughly and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice,” Gesey said.
Gesey called on the government to strengthen security in Damasa and surrounding areas, particularly during vulnerable hours when residents are travelling to places of worship.
“We appeal to the security agencies to increase their presence and protect the community. Residents should also cooperate with the authorities and provide any information that may help in identifying those behind the attack,” he added.
The Lafey residents are urged to remain calm and avoid retaliatory actions that could worsen the security situation.

“We ask our people to remain peaceful and calm. No one should take the law into their own hands. Justice must be pursued through the proper legal channels,” Gesey said.
Other community elders have joined the call for a full investigation, urging authorities to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine whether there were any wider security concerns in the area.
They further condemned the attack, describing it as a serious violation of the sanctity of life and a deeply disturbing act that has caused fear and grief within the community.
The elders expressed their condolences to the affected family and urged residents to remain patient and seek justice through the proper legal channels.
They also called on the community to leave the matter to God and the relevant authorities, while praying for peace, justice and an end to violence in the area.
The elders also appealed to residents to remain vigilant, report suspicious activities to security agencies and work together to safeguard peace and stability in Lafey.
The incident comes amid continued calls for closer cooperation between local communities, elders and security agencies to prevent violence and strengthen security across the region.
