Kenya, May 29, 2026 - A storm erupted in Laikipia on Friday after leaders from the county strongly opposed reports of a planned Ebola quarantine and treatment facility, demanding full disclosure from the government over what they termed a dangerous and suspicious move.
In a strongly worded joint statement signed by Laikipia East MP Mwangi Kiunjuri, Laikipia West MP Wachira Karani, Laikipia North MP Sarah Korere, and Laikipia Woman Representative Jane Kagiri, the leaders questioned why Kenya, and specifically Laikipia, was being considered for the facility.
“Our collective conscience is greatly disturbed by the news that there is intention by the Government of Kenya to have an Ebola Quarantine and Treatment Facility in Laikipia County,” the leaders said.
The lawmakers said that although they recognise the importance of coordinated global efforts in combating deadly disease outbreaks, the government had failed to provide transparency on the matter.
“Why is the Government not giving full disclosure of its intentions?” the statement posed.
The MPs further questioned why the United States would allegedly support the establishment of such a facility outside its borders instead of handling affected persons within its own territory.
“Why Laikipia? What does the US Government know about this that they are not accepting their own affected citizens into their soil but are ready to have them elsewhere?” they asked.
The leaders also argued that any treatment or quarantine centre would make more sense if established in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where Ebola outbreaks have historically occurred.
More from Kenya
“Why not set up the facility at the source of the outbreak for greater, speedy and efficient management?” the statement added.
The legislators insisted that neither Kenya nor Laikipia should host the facility, saying the safety of residents must remain the top priority.
“In our view, and as the representatives of the great people of Laikipia County, we see no logic in Kenya and Laikipia County hosting such a facility,” they said.
The statement is likely to intensify national debate and political pressure on the Kenya Kwanza administration to clarify whether plans exist to establish an Ebola-related facility in the county.
The leaders urged residents to remain calm as they await official communication from the government.
“The safety and protection of our people MUST and SHOULD remain the highest priority,” the MPs said.
