Kenya, 16 April 2026 - Laikipia Governor Joshua Irungu has intensified calls for stronger regional cooperation among northern counties, unveiling plans aimed at boosting peace, livestock development and economic resilience.
Irungu said he held high-level talks with Baringo Governor and Co-operation for Peace and Development (CoPaD) Chairperson Benjamin Cheboi, focusing on strategies to enhance stability and shared prosperity across Laikipia, Baringo, Samburu and Isiolo counties.
The governor underscored the urgency of fast-tracking the CoPaD Bill, describing it as critical to transforming livestock production and strengthening disease control systems in the region.
“We must move with speed to implement the CoPaD Bill, which is vital for livestock development and improving disease control throughout our region,” Irungu said.
In a move aimed at tightening coordination, Irungu announced that Laikipia County will establish a CoPaD Secretariat office in Nanyuki to streamline operations and ensure efficient execution of joint programmes.
The leaders also proposed a joint mass livestock vaccination campaign across the four counties, targeting reduced disease outbreaks, increased productivity and protection of pastoral livelihoods.

“We are advocating for shared responsibility among counties to safeguard our livestock and secure the livelihoods of our communities,” he added.
Irungu said the renewed collaboration signals a unified commitment by regional leaders to address insecurity, economic vulnerability and cross-border challenges affecting pastoral areas.
“Our focus is on building strong partnerships that deliver meaningful and lasting impact for our people,” he said.
