Italy, 17 August 2026 - Juventus have reached an agreement with Tottenham Hotspur to sign Italian goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, with the move set to go through on an initial loan basis.
Tottenham have accepted Juventus' proposal for a season-long loan containing a non-mandatory option to buy. Vicario wanted the move to Turin and is expected to leave Tottenham immediately.
The agreement brings an end to a rapidly developing transfer story that intensified after Juventus' pursuit of Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez collapsed and their interest in Parma's Zion Suzuki became increasingly complicated.
The goalkeeper's preference was an important factor in the negotiations.
Vicario had reportedly been open to returning to Italy after three seasons in England, and Juventus emerged as his preferred destination. Contacts between the clubs intensified over the weekend before the final agreement was reached. Gianluca Di Marzio had previously reported that negotiations were accelerating, while other Italian reports indicated that personal terms were already agreed.
Juventus' final proposal differs from an outright transfer. The Italian giants will initially take Vicario on loan, with the ability to make the move permanent through a buy option rather than an obligation.
That distinction is significant because Juventus have been operating under financial constraints during the summer window.
Vicario's departure represents a major change for Tottenham.
The Italian goalkeeper had been Spurs' first-choice goalkeeper for his first three seasons at the club, but his position changed during the summer following the emergence of Antonín Kinský.
Reports indicate that new Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi has promoted Kinský as his preferred No. 1, while veteran Martin Dúbravka provides additional competition. Vicario consequently found himself outside the club's plans and did not feature during Tottenham's pre-season campaign.
The 29-year-old's departure therefore allows Tottenham to reshape their goalkeeping department while giving Vicario an opportunity to restart his career in Serie A.
Vicario joined Tottenham from Empoli in 2023 after establishing himself as one of Serie A's most impressive goalkeepers.
His first season in north London was particularly impressive, with his shot-stopping ability and performances under pressure quickly making him a fan favourite.
He also became an important part of Tottenham's build-up play, although his time at the club subsequently became more difficult amid injuries and inconsistent performances.

Despite those challenges, Vicario leaves with significant Premier League experience and remains an established Italy international.
Juventus' decision to pursue Vicario came after a turbulent search for a new goalkeeper.
The club had explored several possibilities, including Martínez and Suzuki. Martínez's proposed move to Turin ultimately broke down, while Suzuki's situation changed dramatically after Aston Villa moved to sign the Japanese international from Parma.
With Juventus needing a reliable goalkeeper before the new Serie A season, Vicario became an increasingly attractive solution.
His familiarity with Italian football should also make his adaptation straightforward.
For Juventus, the loan structure reduces their immediate financial commitment while allowing them to assess Vicario over an entire season before deciding whether to activate the purchase option.
For Tottenham, it provides a solution for a goalkeeper who had fallen behind Kinský in the pecking order.
The transfer is now agreed, with the remaining formalities required to complete the move.
