UK, August 16, 2026 - The 2026/27 English football season begins with a heavyweight encounter as Premier League champions Arsenal face FA Cup winners Manchester City in the Community Shield at Cardiff's Principality Stadium on Sunday.
The fixture is particularly significant because it marks Enzo Maresca's first competitive match as Manchester City manager since succeeding Pep Guardiola, while Mikel Arteta begins the defence of Arsenal's Premier League crown. The match kicks off at 3pm BST.
For Maresca, this is about much more than a traditional season curtain-raiser. Replacing Guardiola after his decade-long reign presents an enormous challenge, and the Community Shield offers the Italian his first opportunity to demonstrate how his City team will look under his leadership.
A new Manchester City era#
Maresca knows Manchester City exceptionally well. He previously managed the club's Elite Development Squad, winning the Premier League 2 title, before returning as one of Guardiola's assistants.
He subsequently managed Parma, Leicester City and Chelsea, winning promotion with Leicester and the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup with Chelsea, before returning to City as Guardiola's successor.
His first task, however, is taking over a side undergoing significant change.
City have lost several experienced players, while Tijjani Reijnders is also expected to leave for Al Qadsiah. The future of Rodri remains another major storyline, with Barcelona pursuing the midfielder. Maresca confirmed that Rodri has returned to training following back surgery but remained cautious about his future.
Despite the uncertainty, Maresca has insisted that City are approaching the Community Shield with the intention of winning it rather than treating it as a glorified friendly.
Arsenal enter the contest as reigning Premier League champions after finally ending their 22-year wait for the English top-flight title.
Arteta's side also reached the Champions League final last season, underlining how far the club have progressed during his tenure.
The Spaniard has another advantage over his counterpart: continuity.
While Maresca is attempting to establish a new identity at City, Arteta has spent years developing Arsenal's tactical structure and squad. That familiarity could be important in a match taking place immediately before the new league campaign.
However, Arsenal are not at full strength.
Arteta confirmed that Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka and Martin Zubimendi are available, despite their recent return following extended post-World Cup breaks. Martin Ødegaard is also ready to play.
William Saliba remains unavailable because of a back injury suffered at the World Cup, while Jurrien Timber is still recovering from a groin problem and needs more time before returning to full training.

The biggest question will be how quickly Maresca can impose his ideas.
City's possession-based football will remain familiar to supporters, but Maresca is expected to bring his own tactical interpretation rather than simply replicate Guardiola.
Against Arsenal, that will be tested immediately.
Arteta's team are particularly strong at pressing, controlling territory and exploiting spaces created when opponents attempt to play out from the back. City's response in possession and their ability to resist Arsenal's pressure could determine the contest.
At the other end, Arsenal will need to deal with City's attacking quality, particularly the threat posed by Erling Haaland and Phil Foden.
Although Arsenal won the 2023 Community Shield against City on penalties, their more recent meetings have been difficult.
City beat Arsenal 2-0 in the 2026 League Cup final and later won 2-1 in the Premier League in April. The previous league meeting, however, ended 1-1 at the Emirates.
The 2023 Community Shield remains an important psychological reference point. Arsenal came from behind to draw 1-1 through Leandro Trossard before winning the shootout 4-1.
For the first time since 2006, the Community Shield is being staged at Cardiff's Principality Stadium rather than Wembley.
The FA moved the fixture because Wembley is unavailable due to pre-planned concerts. The Cardiff venue previously hosted the Community Shield six times between 2001 and 2006.
Referee Sam Barrott will officiate the match, with VAR also in operation.
Arsenal arguably enter with the advantage of stability and confidence after their historic Premier League triumph.
City, meanwhile, possess enormous individual quality but are entering a new era. Maresca's first competitive match will therefore be an immediate examination of his ability to manage expectation, tactical transition and a squad still experiencing considerable change.
The result will not determine the Premier League title race, but it could provide an intriguing early indication of where both clubs stand.
