Djibouti, (Dawan), 26 July 2026 – The International Organization for Migration (IOM) held a regional workshop for journalists and communications officers from across the Horn of Africa to strengthen reporting on migration along the Eastern Route.
The workshop, titled “The Eastern Route: Empowering Media to Report on Migration from the Horn of Africa to Yemen and the Gulf,” brought together journalists, communications officers from IOM country offices, regional experts and officials from several countries in the Horn of Africa.
The training aimed to build the capacity of media professionals and communications officers to provide the public with accurate, balanced and data-driven reporting while respecting the dignity of migrants.
The discussions also emphasised the importance of avoiding unverified information, misleading narratives and language that could undermine the dignity and rights of migrants.

Journalists were encouraged to combine official data with the voices and personal experiences of people affected by migration. This approach would give their reporting a stronger human dimension and help the public better understand the circumstances that drive people to migrate.
Djibouti, located at the heart of the Eastern Route, plays an important role in regional migration movements. The country serves as a transit point for many migrants seeking to cross the Red Sea to Yemen before continuing towards Gulf countries.
The workshop is expected to contribute to deeper, more balanced and more humane media coverage of migration and the challenges faced by migrants along the Eastern Route.
