Kenya, 14 April 2026 - Kajiado Governor Joseph Ole Lenku has formed a nine-member advisory unit that will guide the full transfer of the Amboseli National Park from the National government to the county government.
In a gazette notice, the county chief said that the team will have the responsibility of coordinating financial and human resource functions of all government departments in relation to the transfer, before the establishment of a Semi-autonomous body through the county
legislation.
The team will be chaired by David Western. Members include Benson Leyian, John Kamanga, Augustine Sekeyian, Jeremiah Ncharo, Jackson Mwato, Nice Lengete, Angela Lapasi Katente, and Felistus Somoine Kashu.
“The functions of the advisory unit will be the full implementation of the County Government Obligations as stipulated in the Transfer Deed signed on 14 October 2025 between the County Government of Kajiado and the National Government,” the governor said.
The cabinet approved the transfer of the national park to the Kajiado County government in July 2025, following long-standing requests from the community.

The handover will empower the county government to manage the daily operation of the park, set an entrance fee, and develop policies to utilise revenue for local development, while the KWS continues to support conservation efforts.
The decision is aimed at enhancing community empowerment, preserving heritage, and fostering sustainable conservation practices.
The new committee is expected to collaborate with the Transition Management Committee, mobilise financial resources to cover incidental costs related to the execution of the deed between the time of operationalisation and the end of the transition period.
“The committee will bring together all relevant stakeholders within the Amboseli Ecosystem to actively harness their participation in the planning and implementation of projects and programmes related to the protection, conservation, and management of wildlife resources in the ecosystem,” the governor said.
The committee is expected to operate until 30 June 2027, and it will be required to submit a report to the governor with appropriate recommendations on how the transition should proceed.
The governor has also said that the team shall be entitled to allowances as per the salaries and remuneration commission guidelines.
