Somalia, 26 July 2026 —Somalia's North East State parliament has voted to strip five lawmakers of parliamentary immunity following a motion presented to the assembly.
According to a statement published by the North East State's television, 57 lawmakers supported the decision, reportedly securing the two-thirds majority required under Article 9 of the parliament's internal regulations.
The lawmakers whose immunity was removed are Makhtal Said Mahmoud, Abdulsalam Abdullahi Abdirahman, Sadiq Jama Muse, Ahmed Ali Mohamed and Ahmed Abdi Hassan.

The administration accused the lawmakers of deviating from the political position and vision upon which the North East State was established. The five lawmakers, however, have not publicly responded to the allegations at the time of reporting.
The decision comes after the North East State parliament recently removed the immunity of MP Fahiima Yusuf Abdullahi, also known as Fahiima Quuje, following her announcement that she was leaving the North East State administration and supporting Somaliland.
The latest move highlights growing political tensions over the direction and political positions of the North East State, while raising questions about the political future of the lawmakers affected by the decision.
