30 April 2026 - Wajir County is in the final stages of preparation to host this year’s Madaraka Day celebrations, in what will be a historic first for the Northern Kenya region.
Government officials say key infrastructure projects are progressing steadily, with completion expected ahead of schedule.
An inspection led by Raymond Omollo, alongside Patrick Mariru and other senior officials, found that construction of the main stadium is now between 65% and 70% complete.
Road upgrades within Wajir town and along major access routes are ongoing, while improvements are also being made to the County Commissioner’s residence, which will host the official State luncheon.
Efforts to strengthen water and electricity supply are also underway. Boreholes are being drilled and water systems expanded, while newly installed generators are helping stabilise power in the area.
Local leaders, led by Governor Ahmed Abdullahi Jiir, are working with the national government to coordinate the preparations.
Dr Omollo said the government was satisfied with the pace of work.
