Wajir (Dawan Africa) – Elders in Wajir gifted Kenyan President William Ruto 100 camels during the 63rd Madaraka Day celebrations, a gesture Governor Ahmed Abdullahi described as a high traditional honour.
It was the first time a national event of this kind was hosted in North Eastern Kenya. The Sunday celebrations was held at the new 10,000-capacity Wajir Stadium.
In his speech, Governor Abdullahi said Ruto had brought “the highest office of the Republic of Kenya” closer to the people of Wajir, describing him as “Resident 001.” He added that the people of Wajir viewed Ruto as a leader who had given the region a renewed sense of national inclusion.

“In our culture, when someone is highly honoured, the highest form of honour is given to kings. The elders of Wajir have said you are our king, and they are giving you 100 camels,” the governor said.
The honour of 100 camels became one of the most talked-about moments of the ceremony, linking Somali culture, national politics, and regional development.
The event showcased the region’s political, cultural, and economic role. Speakers said northeastern Kenya is no longer seen as a border region, but as an area attracting projects and investments.
