Argentina, August 31, 2026 - Lionel Messi has officially announced his retirement from the Argentina national team, bringing one of the greatest international careers in football history to an emotional conclusion.
The 39-year-old confirmed his decision in a deeply personal statement, explaining that he had already written the words on July 21, two days after Argentina's 1-0 defeat to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final. The death of his father, Jorge Messi, earlier this month ultimately strengthened his conviction that the time had come to close the chapter.
Messi's decision ends more than two decades of service to Argentina. He made his senior debut in 2005 and went on to become the country's most iconic footballer, eventually leading the national team to the 2021 Copa América, 2022 World Cup and 2024 Copa América.
His final World Cup campaign ended in heartbreak. Argentina reached the 2026 final but lost 1-0 to Spain after extra time, denying Messi the opportunity to finish his international career with another world title. Nevertheless, his tournament was extraordinary. He scored eight goals and provided four assists as Argentina reached a second consecutive World Cup final.
The decision also comes shortly after Messi's father and longtime representative, Jorge Messi, died aged 68. In an emotional tribute following his father's death, Messi admitted that he had doubts about continuing his playing career, highlighting the enormous personal impact of the loss.
That makes his latest announcement particularly poignant.
Messi thanked Argentina's supporters, his family, teammates, coaches and officials, saying he leaves the national team with peace and pride after giving everything he had to the famous blue-and-white shirt. He also acknowledged that a new generation of Argentine players deserves an opportunity to take the team forward.
