Kenya, 23 June 2026 - Director of Public Prosecution has approved murder charges for students at Utumishi girls Academy suspected of arson.
In a press statement, the DPP said upon careful assessment of the evidence, they approved charges against the implicated students. The suspect will face (16) counts of murder arising from the incident.
16 students lost their lives on 28 May 2026 when students allegedly set the dormitory on fire.
Seven students were arrested by the police after investigation with CCTV showing how the moments implicated students set the dormitory on fire.
The DPP said they received and carefully reviewed the file after receiving the investigation from the Directorate of the Criminal of Criminal Investigation (DCI).
“The DPP expresses deep concern over the recent increase in reported incidents of arson and other related acts of criminal conduct in educational institutions across the country” read part of the statement by public affairs and corporate communications division.

The DPP cautioned students and members of the public that individuals found culpable of such criminal offences of this nature will be held accountable in accordance with the law.
While sending heartfelt sympathies to the families, friends and the school community affected by the tragic incident, The DPP said they remain committed to ensuring justice through fair, impartial and evidence based prosecution process.
“The ODPP further reaffirms its dedication to upholding the rule of law, protecting public interest, promoting the administration of justice, and ensuring accountability where criminal conduct is established through investigation," read part of the statement.
