USA July 2, 2026 - The United States booked their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 with a determined 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina in Santa Clara, overcoming the dismissal of star striker Folarin Balogun to keep their hopes of a deep tournament run alive.
Mauricio Pochettino's side produced a disciplined performance in front of a home crowd at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium, with Balogun opening the scoring before being sent off in the second half. Malik Tillman then sealed the victory with a superb late free-kick as the 10-man Americans held firm against increasing Bosnian pressure.
The hosts started brightly and looked dangerous from the opening whistle, with Folarin Balogun at the heart of nearly every attacking move.
The striker thought he had opened the scoring in the 31st minute after finishing confidently inside the penalty area, but celebrations were cut short when the assistant referee flagged for offside.
Balogun continued to trouble Bosnia's defence and was twice denied in the penalty area before finally getting the breakthrough just before halftime.
In the 45th minute, veteran defender Tim Ream intercepted a Bosnia goal kick near midfield to launch a quick attack. Malik Tillman threaded a pass into the box, and after a deflection from Bosnian defender Stjepan Radeljić, the ball fell kindly to Balogun. The striker reacted first, calmly guiding a left-footed finish beyond goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj to give the United States a deserved 1-0 lead. It was Balogun's third goal of the tournament, moving him to within one of Bert Patenaude's all-time U.S. men's World Cup record of four goals in a single tournament, set in 1930.
Balogun nearly doubled the advantage in first-half stoppage time, but his close-range effort crashed against the crossbar after another dangerous American move.
The turning point came in the 64th minute.
While challenging Bosnia defender Tarik Muharemović for possession, Balogun accidentally stepped on his opponent's ankle as both players fell to the ground. Referee Raphael Claus initially allowed play to continue but was instructed to review the incident by the Video Assistant Referee.
After watching the replay on the pitchside monitor, Claus upgraded the decision to a straight red card, reducing the United States to ten men for the final 26 minutes plus stoppage time. The decision proved controversial, with several former referees and analysts arguing the challenge lacked the force normally associated with serious foul play.
The dismissal means Balogun will be suspended for the Round of 16 clash against Belgium.
With a numerical advantage, Bosnia and Herzegovina took control of possession and began pushing for an equaliser.

The Americans were forced into a defensive effort, with centre-backs Tim Ream and Chris Richards producing composed displays under sustained pressure. Goalkeeper Matt Freese also made key interventions as Bosnia searched for a way back into the contest.
Despite controlling much of the second half, Bosnia struggled to create clear-cut chances against the disciplined American defence.
As Bosnia committed more players forward, the United States earned a free kick just outside the penalty area in the 82nd minute.
Malik Tillman stepped up and curled a powerful effort over the wall. Goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj managed to get a hand to the ball, but he could not keep it out as the strike found the back of the net to make it 2-0 and effectively end Bosnia's hopes of a comeback.
The goal capped an outstanding individual performance from Tillman, who assisted Balogun's opener before scoring the decisive second goal.
Bosnia and Herzegovina exit the tournament after reaching the knockout stage for the first time in their history.
Having qualified as one of the best third-placed teams following a draw against Canada and a victory over Qatar in the group stage, Sergej Barbarez's side competed bravely but ultimately lacked the cutting edge needed to trouble the Americans consistently.
The victory sends the United States into the Round of 16, where they will face Belgium, who dramatically came from two goals down to defeat Senegal 3-2 after extra time.
While the Americans will take confidence from their resilience and defensive discipline, they will also have to cope without Balogun, whose suspension leaves Mauricio Pochettino with a significant selection challenge ahead of one of the biggest matches of the tournament.
The United States showed both quality and character to progress to the last 16. Balogun's first-half goal put them in control, but his controversial red card transformed the contest into a stern defensive examination. Bosnia pressed relentlessly with the extra man, yet the Americans remained organized before Tillman's brilliant free kick sealed a deserved 2-0 victory.
With momentum still on their side despite losing one of their key attackers, the USA now turn their attention to a mouthwatering Round of 16 showdown against Belgium, knowing another disciplined performance could take them one step closer to a historic World Cup run.
