U.S , June 15, 2026 - Spain's 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign got off to an unexpected start as the European giants were held to a goalless draw by a disciplined and determined Cape Verde side at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
Entering the tournament as one of the favourites for the title, Spain dominated possession and territory for long periods but could not find a way past a heroic Cape Verde defence and an inspired goalkeeper, Vozinha, who delivered one of the standout individual performances of the tournament so far.
For Cape Verde, this was more than just a point.
