Somalia, 30 April 2026 Somalia’s disaster management agency has warned of flood risks linked to Gu rains, urging residents along Shabelle and Juba rivers to remain vigilant.
Rainfall forecasts for the period from late April to early May indicate moderate to heavy rains across parts of southern Somalia, including Gedo, Bay, Bakool, Lower Juba, Middle Juba, Lower Shabelle, Middle Shabelle and Banadir, with expected totals of 50 to 80 mm, according to SoDMA.
Other regions, including Togdheer, North West, Sool, Sanaag, Nugaal, Mudug, Galgaduud and Hiiraan, are expected to receive lighter rainfall ranging from 20 to 50 mm, the agency added.

SoDMA warned that areas in Lower Juba, Middle Juba, Gedo, Bay, Lower Shabelle and Middle Shabelle face an increased risk of flooding and flash floods, particularly in low-lying and riverine areas.
The agency said rising rainfall could lead to higher water levels in the Shabelle River, increasing the likelihood of flooding.
SoDMA urged residents in flood-prone areas and along riverbanks to take precautionary measures and avoid high-risk locations.
