MOGADISHU, November 4, 2026 - Somalia’s disaster management agency and British officials have discussed ways to strengthen disaster preparedness and early warning systems ahead of a forecast El Nino weather pattern, the agency said on Wednesday.
Mahamud Moallim Abdulle, head of the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), met a delegation from Britain’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) led by Rurik Marsden, deputy director for humanitarian policy and partnerships.
The delegation also included Ranil Dissanayake, deputy chief economist, Tim Green, a team leader in the analysis department, and Martin Gichuru, a humanitarian adviser.
The talks focused on the El Nino forecast and its potential impact on Somalia, as well as closer humanitarian cooperation and plans for disaster preparedness and prevention, SoDMA said in a statement.
The two sides also discussed strengthening early warning systems and preventive measures, building the capacity of government institutions and making communities more resilient to floods, droughts and other climate-related hazards, the statement said.
Abdulle praised Britain’s continued support and its partnership with Somalia on disaster management and humanitarian affairs.
