MOGADISHU, November 4, 2026 — Somalia will have its first Genomics Laboratory after the foundation stone was laid for a modern building at Dr. Sumait Hospital, affiliated with SIMAD University.
The building, funded by Direct Aid, will house the Genomics Laboratory, modern inpatient and outpatient facilities, and dedicated rooms for patient reception and medical consultations.
The project is part of the hospital's expansion plan and is expected to enhance the country's capacity in specialized medical testing, research and the training of healthcare professionals.
The foundation stone was jointly laid by SIMAD University President Dr. Abdikarim Mohyiddin Ahmed, Direct Aid Director Mohamed Sheikh Bashir, and the Director General of the Ministry of Health and Social Care, Yusuf Hassan Isak.
The hospital's expansion goes beyond infrastructure and medical equipment. It also includes plans to bring international doctors to Somalia to provide specialized healthcare services, potentially enabling Somali patients to access advanced medical care locally rather than travelling abroad.
The ceremony comes as SIMAD University celebrates the 27th anniversary of its establishment, reflecting the university's continued efforts to advance education, research and healthcare services for the Somali community.
