MOGADISHU, November 4, 2026 — Benadir University has launched a Master of Medicine in Ophthalmology to train doctors specialising in eye care and reduce the need for patients to travel abroad for treatment.
The program, run by the School of Postgraduate Studies and Research Centre, aims to advance clinical expertise in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases and improve vision health in Somalia.
President of Benadir University Prof. Dr. Mohamed Mohamud Hassan 'Biday' said the program is an important step in advancing medical education in the country.
"Somalia needs doctors who specialise in eye care and can treat patients at home, rather than patients having to travel abroad," Prof. Biday said. "This program gives our young doctors the opportunity to receive high-level specialist training in their own country, and then serve their communities."
The launch marks a shift in Somalia's medical education from first medical degrees toward specialist training that Somali doctors previously had to obtain abroad.
