Somalia, 10 June 2026 – Somalia’s Foreign Ministry said it will seek further clarification from relevant partners after U.S. authorities denied entry to Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan.
In a statement on Wednesday, the ministry said it deeply regretted the decision by U.S. authorities to bar Artan from entering the United States.
Artan, who won the Confederation of African Football’s Best Referee award for 2025, is one of Somalia’s most prominent sports figures and a source of national pride, the ministry said.
The ministry said the Federal Government had made diplomatic efforts with relevant parties to support Artan’s travel, but said those efforts did not lead to the desired outcome.
Somalia said it valued Artan’s achievements and contributions, adding that his success continued to inspire Somali youth.
