Somalia, July 8, 2026 – Somalia’s cabinet reviewed a report on potential risks from Super El Nino and approved measures to strengthen national preparedness, the Office of the Prime Minister said on Thursday.
The report, prepared by the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation and the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), warned that the country could face floods, flash floods and displacement linked to heavy rains.
The government said the potential impacts could affect agricultural production, livestock, livelihoods and national food security.
The cabinet meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, was presented with a national preparedness plan aimed at improving early response, strengthening coordination among government institutions and reducing the impact of possible El Nino-related disasters.

The plan focuses on protecting lives, supporting agricultural activities and enhancing food security, according to the Prime Minister’s Office.
Somalia has experienced repeated climate-related shocks in recent years, including severe droughts and flooding that have displaced communities and affected farming and livestock across parts of the country.
The government said preparedness efforts were being strengthened to mitigate possible impacts.
