Aston Villa initially appeared dangerous, with Emiliano Buendía registering three attempts inside the opening 10 minutes. But Brighton quickly turned the game completely on its head.

Things became even worse for Villa shortly afterwards.
João Gomes, making his Aston Villa debut following his summer move from Wolves, received a second yellow card in the 40th minute and was sent off after VAR intervention for kicking out at Brighton's Georginio Rutter.

By half-time, Unai Emery's side were 4-0 down and reduced to 10 men.
Villa had also managed just a handful of attempts and were comprehensively outplayed by Brighton.
The Seagulls finished the match with around 70% possession, 17 shots compared with Villa's five and an expected-goals figure of approximately 3.44 to Villa's 0.21.
