Ethiopia, 14 May 2026 – Somali Regional State plans to expand the Fedhacad project to improve water supply for Jigjiga.
The region's Water Bureau said a study report on the project was presented during a meeting held on Thursday in Jigjiga.
The project, previously four wells, will expand with two new wells producing 12 litres per second. The Jigjiga city administration has already allocated funding for the work.
The bureau said the existing 17-kilometer pipeline will be replaced after repeated technical problems linked to its route through agricultural land.
Under the revised plan, the new pipeline will follow the road linking Tulli and Jigjiga and connect to the 500-cubic-meter Qoordheere reservoir in an effort to reduce damage risks and improve maintenance access.

According to the bureau, the Fedhacad wells previously produced around 1,000 cubic meters of water, but aging infrastructure and pipeline failures had reduced the system’s efficiency in recent years.
The expansion is expected to increase water production capacity to 3,240 cubic meters per day, improving water coverage in the town.
The additional supply is expected to help ease water shortages affecting parts of Jigjiga as demand for clean water continues to rise.
The town has faced recurring water shortages linked to drought conditions, rapid population growth and pressure on aging infrastructure in recent years.
The bureau added that upgrading water infrastructure was important for improving public services and strengthening the city’s water distribution system.
