Somalia 10 June 2026 – Somali opposition lawmaker Abdirahman Abdishakur Warsame said the federal government lacks legitimacy to carry out disarmament, amid continuing political and security tensions in Mogadishu.
Abdirahman Abdishakur made the remarks in a press statement on Tuesday night after a meeting of the Somali Salvation Forum in Mogadishu.
He said the opposition forum maintained its position that the federal government’s mandate had expired and that President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud no longer had the legitimacy to lead the country.
Abdishakur said disarmament should not be treated only as a security issue, but as a political process requiring a system, agreement and recognised procedures.

“Disarmament is a political process; it is not a security issue,” Abdirahman Abdishakur said.He said any disarmament process should follow a recognised framework and could not be imposed through military pressure or by an authority the opposition describes as illegitimate.
The lawmaker also accused the government of misunderstanding the nature of state authority, saying weapons intended to fight enemies or militant groups should not be used against politicians, traditional elders or civilians.
The federal government is yet to respond to his remarks.
His comments come as mediation efforts involving Turkey and members of the international community continue. The efforts aim to bring Somali political actors back to the negotiation table following recent clashes in Mogadishu.
