June 06, 2026 - The Somali Embassy in Nairobi has reaffirmed its support for the development of football and youth empowerment in Somalia following a meeting between Ambassador Jabril Ibrahim Abdulle and officials from the Somali Football Federation.
A delegation from the federation, led by its chairman Cali Abdi Maxamed (Ali Shiine , paid a working visit to the embassy where discussio focused on the current state of football in Somalia, progress made in the sport, and future plans aimed at nurturing young talent and strengthening the country's football sector.
During the meeting, federation officials briefed the ambassador on ongoing efforts to improve football development and expand opportunities for Somali youth through sports.
The delegation also informed the embassy that the federation is considering hosting some of its international matches in Nairobi as it awaits a decision from FIFA on the return of "home advantage" matches to Somalia.
According to the federation, Nairobi remains a suitable venue due to its large Somali community and strong support base for Somali football.
Ambassador Jabril commended the federation for its efforts to develop the sport and provide opportunities for young people to showcase their talents.
He emphasized the role of sports in promoting national unity, peace, and social development, noting that football can serve as a powerful tool for bringing communities together and inspiring young people.
The ambassador further assured the federation of the embassy's continued support for initiatives aimed at advancing sports in Somalia and empowering the country's youth.
He noted that the Somali Embassy in Nairobi remains committed to facilitating travel documentation and visa processes for sports delegations participating in competitions and other international engagements.
The meeting comes as Somali football authorities continue to push for greater international participation and improved sporting infrastructure while seeking opportunities to nurture the next generation of athletes.
Officials said strengthening partnerships between sports institutions and diplomatic missions will be key to supporting Somali athletes and expanding the country's presence in regional and international competitions.
The Somali National team preparations comes ahead of 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, also referred to as AFCON 2027 or CAN 2027, the 36th edition of the African football tournament organised by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) as a biennial tournament. It will be hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania from 19 June to 17 July 2027.
