Kenya, June 23, 2026 - The government is set to complete the construction of the proposed Siaya County Referral Hospital in December, as it pushes to improve the health and economic capacity of the county.
The Ministry of Health revealed this on Tuesday after the Medical Services Principal Secretary, Ouma Oluga, and his Defence counterpart, Peter Mariru, inspected the ongoing construction of the project.
The hospital, whose construction commenced in October 2025 following a directive by William Ruto, will have a capacity of 250 beds. The project is expected to transform and improve access to quality healthcare services in the county.
“ The hospital is a flagship health infrastructure project being implemented by the Ministry of Defence through the Kenya Defence Forces following a directive by President William Ruto,” The Ministry stated.
“Construction, which commenced in October 2025, is progressing well and is expected to be completed by December 2026. Once operational, the facility will enhance the county’s healthcare capacity and support the Government’s efforts to achieve Universal Health Coverage,” it added.
The two PSs also conducted a site visit to the ongoing upgrade works at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium in Siaya County, whose construction is also being spearheaded by the Kenya Defence Forces, and is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
The project will increase the stadium’s seating capacity from 5,000 to 15,000 and includes the construction of additional terraces, a roof canopy, improved parking facilities, a ring road, and associated mechanical and electrical works.
The project is set to play a central role in supporting sports development, nurturing talent, and contributing to the socio-economic growth of the county.
“Principal Secretary for Medical Services Dr. Ouma Oluga and Principal Secretary for Defence Dr. Peter Mariru inspected the ongoing upgrade works at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium in Siaya County, a project being implemented by the Ministry of Defence through the Kenya Defence Forces,” MOH stated.
