MOGADISHU (Dawan), 7 August 2026 — The Federal Government of Somalia is developing plans to establish a National Data Centre to strengthen digital infrastructure and services, State Minister for Communications Ahmed Osman Dirie has said.
Speaking at the launch of Garad.ai by Arkaan AI Centre on Thursday, Dirie said the government is prioritizing infrastructure needed to advance the technology sector. He said the proposed Data Centre would address the country’s growing needs in data storage and management.
The State Minister said the government is encouraging innovation and the adoption of modern technologies, particularly initiatives led by young Somali innovators.
“Somalia has made progress in the technology sector, but we still need to strengthen our digital infrastructure to provide modern, reliable and efficient services,” Dirie said.

He added that the National Data Centre is among the initiatives currently being planned, and that the facility would play an important role in storing data, improving government services and supporting the country’s expanding digital systems.
Dirie said the Ministry of Communications and Technology is also working on policies and plans to advance the technology sector, while continuing to support local companies and technology centres developing innovative solutions.
His remarks come as Somalia steps up efforts to expand digital services, artificial intelligence and infrastructure needed to securely store and protect the country’s data.
