Kenya, june 20, 2026 - Supporters of President William Ruto stepped up grassroots mobilisation in Kisumu on Saturday as the ruling United Democratic Alliance expanded its early campaign operations in Nyanza ahead of the 2027 general election.
Speaking at Lake Market in Kisumu Central Constituency, UDA National Youth Leader Cedrick Mike Otieno urged traders, women groups and young people to register as voters and back President Ruto's re-election bid.
He said development in Kisumu was visible and should translate into political participation. "We are asking our people to turn development into continuity by participating in 2027 elections," Otieno said.
He added that youth mobilisation remained central to the ruling party's strategy. He said young people must organise early and secure voter cards ahead of the polls. He argued that ongoing government projects in markets, roads and small business infrastructure demonstrated inclusive growth under President Ruto's administration.
Separately, a parallel mobilisation network linked to Interior Principal Secretary Dr Raymond Omollo has intensified political activity across Nyanza through structured voter listing and civic engagement programmes.
Through the Kenya Youth Transition Initiative, teams have been engaging traders, boda boda operators, women groups and youth associations in sustained outreach forums promoting voter registration.
The programme, which officials say is patronised by Dr Omollo, has increasingly framed its message around what organisers describe as a two-term development agenda aimed at consolidating government support.
This week KYTI teams led by Salmon Oyieko pitched tent at Kondele roundabout where large-scale voter registration drives were held with Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission officials present.
Organisers said thousands of young people attended the Kondele exercise, underscoring what they described as growing political mobilisation in a region long considered an opposition stronghold.

The presence of IEBC officials was aimed at ensuring credibility and transparency in the voter registration process, according to organisers.
The sustained mobilisation reflects a coordinated strategy by UDA-aligned actors to expand their political footprint beyond traditional strongholds. It also signals intensified early campaigning for President Ruto's re-election bid as the 2027 electoral cycle gains momentum.
Analysts say the push into Nyanza is politically significant given the region's historical alignment with opposition politics. However, the outcome will depend on whether political messaging is matched by sustained economic delivery on the ground.
Traders at Lake Market said the engagement focused on economic pressure points including taxation, access to credit and market infrastructure improvements. Supporters said improved market facilities and government-led empowerment programmes were influencing political sentiment among informal sector workers.
Political organisers said the voter registration drive remains central to consolidating support ahead of the 2027 elections across Kisumu and wider Nyanza.
Officials said KYTI programmes have increased frequency of civic forums, door-to-door mobilisation and structured engagement with youth groups across multiple constituencies in Nyanza. They added that coordination between political leadership and grassroots networks has improved efficiency of voter outreach operations in the region.
Party figures maintain that the expansion strategy is intended to strengthen democratic participation rather than predetermine electoral outcomes, insisting the focus remains on civic awareness, voter registration and national cohesion.
Nonetheless, the scale of mobilisation in Kisumu and surrounding areas indicates a heightened political tempo as Kenya edges closer to a closely contested 2027 race. Both ruling party actors and allied networks say they will sustain weekly outreach programmes across the region.
