Somalia, 8 December 2025 — The President of Puntland, Said Abdullahi Deni, announced that the federal member state will host a major conference to discuss the challenges hindering Somalia’s state-building efforts.
President Deni stated that the conference will provide an opportunity for scholars, researchers, and experts in politics and governance to find concrete solutions to the problems.
"We in Puntland aim to work with experts in the field of state-building and hold a conference in Garowe to examine, from an academic perspective, the challenges that hinder Somalia’s nation-building efforts," the President said at the Puntland Book Exhibition on Sunday evening.
He emphasized that the conversation should continue even after the three-day conference adding that the issue is complex and cannot be exhausted in a gathering.

He highlighted the necessity for experts and individuals knowledgeable in governance to come together and thoroughly examine the issue for the benefit of Somalia.
Deni said national leadership should be driven by reason and intelligence, while avoiding unproductive political ambitions. He acknowledged that politicians may sometimes pursue agendas that do not align with the nation-building process.
Deni also reflected on the past three decades of Somalia’s state-building efforts, acknowledging the delays and underperformance in many areas. He pointed out that while progress has been made, much more could have been accomplished if politicians had not been distracted by irrelevant issues.
