Qatar, 8 December 2025 — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said that the war in Gaza has exposed profound structural weaknesses within the international justice system and revealed the inability of post–Second World War institutions to uphold global law and fairness.
Speaking during a panel session at the Doha Forum, the president stated that “the problem with international law is that there is no authority you can call upon the moment violations occur,” noting that the current system allows major powers to obstruct the enforcement of international laws whenever such enforcement conflicts with their interests.
Hassan Sheikh stressed that recent events “have distorted the global sense of justice and weakened public trust in international institutions,” adding that “several major powers have lost the moral compass that once allowed them to claim they were protectors of justice.”

He emphasized the growing international consensus that the United Nations and the Security Council require comprehensive reform to restore effectiveness and deterrence. “The current system is not functioning properly, and it is only a matter of time before essential changes are made,” he said.
As a non-permanent member of the Security Council, Somalia will continue to push for institutional reforms that ensure greater transparency and fairness. He concluded by saying, “What we are witnessing today may well become a turning point for the global system of justice and diplomacy.”
