June 28, 2026 - One security officer was killed after suspected Al-Shabaab militants attacked a General Service Unit (GSU) operations camp in Fafi, Garissa County, on Friday evening, according to a security incident report by Armstice Security Consultant International (ASCI).
The attack, which occurred at around 8:15 p.m., triggered a heavy exchange of gunfire between the assailants and security personnel stationed at the camp.
ASCI said security forces successfully repelled the assault, with several of the suspected militants believed to have been injured during the confrontation. Clearance and pursuit operations were launched immediately after the attack to track down the fleeing attackers.
The latest incident marks the second attack targeting the same GSU camp this year, following a similar assault reported in February, underscoring the continued security challenges in the border region.
Fafi, located near the Kenya-Somalia border, has long been considered a high-risk area due to frequent incursions by the Somalia-based militant group Al-Shabaab. The group has repeatedly targeted security installations using hit-and-run attacks aimed at testing security responses, gathering intelligence and disrupting counter-terrorism operations.

According to ASCI's assessment, the attack reflects Al-Shabaab's continued operational capability despite sustained military pressure by Kenyan security agencies. The security consultancy warned of an elevated risk of follow-up attacks in Fafi, Garissa and other surrounding border areas as militants attempt to regroup.
Authorities are expected to maintain heightened security operations in the region, with increased patrols and surveillance along the Kenya-Somalia border.
The National Police Service and other security agencies had not issued an official statement on the incident by the time of publication. The reported casualty and other operational details have therefore not been independently verified.
