ODM Signals Long-Term Stay in Government, Pushes for Greater Political Influence

Kenya, 31 May 2026 - The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has moved to quell speculation about its future in government, declaring that it intends to remain part of the broad-based administration while positioning itself to play a bigger role in Kenya’s political future.

During a rally in Kirembe, Kisumu County, on Sunday, party leaders adopted a series of resolutions that reaffirmed ODM’s commitment to working within government even as it pursues its long-term political ambitions.

In a statement released after the gathering, the party said: “We reaffirm our commitment to staying in the broad-based government and in government now and in the future and building partnerships to capture power (Tunataka power).”

The declaration is one of the clearest signals yet that ODM plans to maintain its cooperation with President William Ruto’s administration while seeking to strengthen its political influence ahead of future elections.

The party also called for the full implementation of its 10-point agenda, particularly the compensation of victims of post-election violence.

At the same time, ODM used the rally to rally supporters around its leadership structure following the death of former party leader Raila Odinga. The party pledged loyalty to the leadership of Dr Oburu Odinga and urged members to support resolutions made by its governing organs.

ODM paid tribute to Raila, describing him as a political icon whose vision continues to shape the party.

“The Luo Community appreciate the role, place and stature of our departed Party Leader and hero the Rt. Hon. Raila Amollo Odinga,” the party said.

The party added that it remains committed to Raila’s ideals of social democracy, devolution and the rule of law.

Beyond politics, ODM highlighted several national concerns, including the rising cost of living and fuel prices. The party expressed hope that government interventions would help ease economic pressure on households amid ongoing global uncertainties.

The leaders also called for urgent action to improve safety in schools following the deadly fire at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil.

“We call for a speedy review of the implementation status of all recommendations of previous committees and commissions formed to look into safety in all schools,” the resolution stated.

On public health, ODM urged authorities to address misinformation surrounding Ebola preparedness and called for a parliamentary inquiry into Kenya’s health programmes related to the disease.

The resolutions capped a rally that blended political messaging with calls for national unity, public safety and economic relief, as the party seeks to define its role within the country’s evolving political landscape.
