UK, August 29, 2026 - Newcastle United have secured their first Premier League victory of the 2026/27 season with an impressive 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, leaving Spurs without a point or a goal from their opening two league matches.
After being beaten 3-0 by Brentford on the opening weekend, Tottenham were hoping that their first home league game would provide a response. Instead, goals from Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa gave Newcastle a deserved victory and raised further questions about Tottenham's early-season direction.
Tottenham struggle despite promising first half#
The first half offered Spurs some encouragement.
Playing in front of their home supporters, Tottenham created opportunities and enjoyed periods of control. Mathys Tel and Jean-Paul van Hecke were among those to threaten, but the hosts lacked the cutting edge required to turn their possession and attacking pressure into goals.
That lack of efficiency ultimately proved costly.
Tottenham had entered the match desperate for a response after their opening-day defeat, but Newcastle gradually grew into the contest and became increasingly dangerous in transition.
The visitors' patience was eventually rewarded after the break.
Newcastle took the lead in the 62nd minute, with Anthony Elanga producing a superb finish.
The goal followed an excellent piece of combination play involving Newcastle's new arrivals. Debutant Nico González played the ball forward before Amar Dedić's involvement helped create the opening for Elanga, who finished into the bottom corner.
The goal changed the complexion of the match.
Tottenham now had to chase the game, while Newcastle were able to exploit the additional space appearing behind the Spurs defence.
Newcastle doubled their advantage just 10 minutes later.
Yoane Wissa produced a spectacular finish following a corner, giving goalkeeper Antonín Kinský little chance and putting the visitors firmly in control.
From there, Tottenham struggled to find a route back into the match.
The final whistle confirmed Newcastle's 2-0 victory, while Spurs were left with a second consecutive defeat.

The result is particularly encouraging for Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle, who is beginning to put his own stamp on a team that underwent significant changes during the summer.
Newcastle had opened the campaign with a 2-2 draw against Liverpool, a match in which they twice led before conceding a late equaliser. The performance against Tottenham was even more convincing, particularly defensively.
The Magpies now have four points from their opening two league matches, while Tottenham remain pointless.
New signings also provided encouragement, with González making his competitive Newcastle debut and Dedić contributing to the move for the opening goal.
For Tottenham, the statistics make uncomfortable reading.
They have now lost their first two Premier League matches by an aggregate 5-0 scoreline.
That is especially concerning given the scale of the club's summer rebuild and the expectations surrounding new manager Roberto De Zerbi.
Spurs have invested heavily in their squad, but the early results suggest that assembling a talented group of players does not automatically produce a cohesive team.
The challenge for De Zerbi is now to find solutions quickly.
There were positive moments against Newcastle, particularly during the first half, but Premier League matches are ultimately decided in the decisive areas of the pitch.
Newcastle were clinical when their opportunities arrived.
Tottenham were not.
For the Magpies, meanwhile, this was more than just three points. It was a statement that the new era under Jaissle could be something special.
Newcastle leave London with four points from two games and growing optimism. Tottenham leave with two defeats, zero goals and plenty of questions.
