July 8 ,2026 - The National Land Commission (NLC) has launched a comprehensive ground verification exercise for eight Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC) project sites in Garissa County in a move aimed at securing public land and accelerating the rollout of electricity infrastructure.
The exercise, which began this week, is being conducted jointly by NLC and REREC officials and focuses on confirming the status, boundaries and land records of the designated sites to support secure land tenure and proper documentation before further project implementation.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the commission said the exercise is being led by NLC Deputy Director of Land Administration Jacinta Gitau,while the REREC team is headed by Martin Wanyamu,
The verification covers power station sites in Dadaab, Eldera, Garsweino, Hulugho, Liboi, Raya, Sangailu and Sankari,all of which form part of REREC's efforts to expand electricity access in Garissa County.
According to the commission, the joint exercise is intended to ensure that the land earmarked for the projects is properly documented and protected, reducing the risk of ownership disputes that could delay the implementation of critical energy infrastructure.
"The exercise aims to verify the status, boundaries and land records of the sites to support secure land tenure, proper documentation and the continued implementation of critical rural electrification and renewable energy infrastructure across the county," the statement said.
The commission said the collaboration demonstrates the commitment of both agencies to strengthening land administration, safeguarding public land and supporting sustainable energy development to improve livelihoods through increased access to electricity.
The verification comes as the government continues to invest in expanding electricity connectivity in underserved regions, particularly in the arid and semi-arid counties where access to reliable power remains below the national average.
The National Land Commission has in recent years undertaken similar joint land verification and documentation exercises with state agencies implementing strategic infrastructure projects, including electricity substations, transmission lines, roads and water projects, to resolve land ownership issues before construction begins. The approach is intended to safeguard public investments by ensuring land acquisition and registration processes comply with legal requirements while minimizing disputes that could stall project implementation.
