Jigjiga, 22 August 2026 Ethiopia’s Somali Regional State has introduced interest-free instalments for smart electricity meters to help low-income earners access reliable power.
The Manager of the Somali Regional State Electricity Service Office said on Friday that the scheme is designed to support low-income households by allowing them to obtain smart meters through an interest-free payment arrangement instead of paying the full cost immediately.
He said smart meters are among the new services introduced in the region, providing customers with better control over electricity consumption and allowing them to monitor their usage and payments more easily.
The manager added that the new meters will help reduce problems caused by excessive electricity consumption by regulating usage and improving the efficiency of electricity services.
