Kenya, August 19, 2026 - Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro has declared an all-out political battle against President William Ruto, branding him “the enemy of this country” and vowing to rally behind efforts to send him home in the 2027 General Election.
In his most hard-hitting attack yet on his former political ally, Nyoro said President Ruto must be defeated at the ballot, signalling his determination to play a leading role in the Opposition campaign to unseat the President.
“The enemy of this country is one William Ruto and he must go home in next year’s General Elections,” Nyoro said in Kikuyu while addressing residents of Murang’a during a meet-the-people tour yesterday.
The declaration marks a dramatic escalation in Nyoro’s political break from the President, coming shortly after the Kiharu MP formally announced his exit from the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and unveiled the People’s Party of Kenya (PPK).
Nyoro said he and his supporters had already disengaged from UDA, insisting his decision to move into the Opposition was deliberate and aimed at building a formidable political force ahead of the 2027 elections.
“For avoidance of doubt, we left government a long time ago and disassociated ourselves with UDA,” he said.
The former influential Ruto ally said PPK had subsequently joined the Opposition, positioning himself at the centre of the political realignment taking place in the vote-rich Mt Kenya region.
Nyoro said he had held extensive consultations with leaders in the Opposition before making his move and urged them to unite around the common objective of defeating President Ruto.
“I have for so long held deep consultations with all leaders within the Opposition outfit. Let us all unite and deliver Kenya,” he said.
His latest declaration could further complicate President Ruto’s attempts to retain his support base in Mt Kenya, where Nyoro was previously among the administration’s most prominent defenders.
More from Kenya
The Kiharu MP also appeared to signal that he is preparing for a bigger national political role, saying political leaders must fight for their ambitions rather than expect positions to be handed to them.
“There is no way somebody from nowhere can come and tell you Ndindi Nyoro from Kiharu, come here and take up this top political position. It is a must for one to toast himself to the battlefield like other men,” he said.
He cited former President Mwai Kibaki and the late Kenneth Matiba as examples of leaders who fought their way through Kenya’s political terrain rather than receiving power “on a silver platter”.
Nyoro also defended his decision to lead PPK, saying the party’s members had chosen him to take charge.
“Is it wrong for me to become a party leader? I, as Ndindi Nyoro, joined a party called People’s Party of Kenya and the owners of that party chose me to become their leader,” he said.
The remarks come as political temperatures rise in Mt Kenya, with former allies of President Ruto increasingly charting separate political paths and Opposition parties seeking to consolidate their support ahead of the 2027 presidential contest.
For Nyoro, however, the message from Murang’a was unequivocal: President Ruto is now his political target, and he intends to be part of the force seeking to end his administration at the ballot box next year.
