Kenya, 16 July 2026 - Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has been ousted as Deputy Minority Whip in the Senate, with the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) naming Migori Senator Eddy Oketch as his replacement.
Senate Speaker Amason Kingi announced on Thursday that the decision was in line with a letter dated 16 July 2026, which he received from the ODM party.
“I received correspondence from the Senate Minority Leader, Senator Stewart Madzayo, regarding the removal of Senator Edwin Sifuna as the Deputy Senate Minority Whip and the election of Senator Eddy Gicheru Oketch to replace him,” Speaker Kingi stated.
Sifuna, a key figure in the Linda Mwananchi faction of ODM that opposes the party’s dalliance with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA), has strongly protested his party’s support for President William Ruto’s second-term bid.
On Thursday morning, the Nairobi Senator told the Senate that he is against any form of dictatorship in the country and that he abhors leaders who use taxpayers’ money to build roads, only to take credit as if they had funded the projects from their own pockets.
“Good leaders build roads, even dictators build roads. But Kenyans want a lifestyle they can be proud of,” Sifuna stated in the Senate.

The ouster did not come as a surprise. Communications strategist and politician Pauline Njoroge claimed that Sifuna’s fate was allegedly sealed at a State House meeting.
“Following a meeting at State House yesterday, which resolved to ruthlessly deal with Edwin Sifuna, he has this afternoon been stripped of his position as Senate Deputy Minority Whip. We soldier on,” she said.
Njoroge maintained that they remain unbowed and unbroken. She also condemned the perpetrators of violence in Ol Kalou during the ongoing by-election, saying there was no justification for unleashing violence in an attempt to subvert the will of the people.
“But the people’s resolve remains stronger than ever,” she added.
Njoroge is a regular participant in Linda Mwananchi rallies.
